For this month’s Used Boat video we’ve tracked down a Dutch displacement cruiser that boasts comfort and practicality in spades
With a history that dates back to the 1970s, Smelne has a strong track record in building comfortable, practical displacement cruisers, but most British buyers will know them best for their Stevens range.
For this month’s Used Boat video, we’ve tracked down a Stevens 1180S, which shows why this range has been consistently popular over the decades.
Launched in 2001 as a broad-beam replacement for the 1140, this model was hugely customisable, with the fabrics, woodwork, lighting and windows all up for discussion.
The 2002 model we inspected was still in great condition throughout, which bears testament to the high-quality materials that Smelne uses.
As you might expect from a Dutch displacement cruiser, the key feature of the Stevens 1180S is the aft cabin, which lets in plenty of natural light and benefits from a split heads compartment.
Engine options vary from twin to single set-ups with just enough power to take on a cross-Channel passage.
