Buying the right 5hp outboard could be one of the most important decisions you make as a boat owner, as you don’t want your tender conking out leaving you struggling with the oars.
With this in mind, we’ve been testing out some of the most popular 5hp outboards on the market, from the likes of Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Tohatsu and Mariner.
We’ve also thrown in something of a curveball into the mix in the form of the Lehr 5hp outboard – a clever alternative that is powered by propane gas cylinders instead of petrol.
In this video, Greg Goulding puts all these engines through their paces on the River Hamble, keeping a close eye on performance, key features and ease of use.
We also measured each engine’s noise at idling, top speed and acceleration to determine which offers the best overall value for money.
