Gordon and Jordan take it to the rest of the world
Fifteen year old Gordon Bamford and eleven year old Jordan Muckles, who were the two victors in the 2007 Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship, represented Great Britain over the weekend at the UIM Formula Future World Championship, as part of the Honda RYA Formula Future team GBR, in Ravenna Italy.
This was the first time the UK had entered a team and despite world class competition the youngsters acquitted themselves well.
Gordon achieved the fastest time of the day in the manoeuvring competition but incurred penalty points for hitting a turn mark thereby denying him of a podium position, while Jordan also put in a solid performance throughout the competition showing great skill and expertise.
With teams from around the world including Malaysia, Russia, Germany, Slovakia and host nation Italy the competition was tough, especially as the courses and boats used are completely different from the one used in the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship.
“Despite no podium places this time round everyone was extremely proud of the boys achievements and feel sure that they will be back to challenge the best of the world at future events,” say UK team bosses.
Gordon, from Fairlie in Scotland, who won the 13-16 age group, competed in class 5 in a RIB boat, maximum 3.6m and 15hp with centre console and starboard throttle, whilst Jordan, from Fulwell in Sunderland, raced in class 3 again in a RIB, maximum 3.6m but with up to an 8hp engine and tiller control.
Back in the UK , both boys are once again focusing on the 2008 Honda RYA Youth RIB championship.
Gordon has already qualified for the national final beating off competition in the Scottish regional final, while Jordan awaits the North East regional final which takes place on 9 August in Hartlepool.
