You are in the middle of a 60-mile passage with your wife and two children between your home port and a destination across the Channel. Your boat is a three-year-old 50ft flybridge cruiser with twin 700hp diesels that has hitherto run faultlessly. Your son is on his way down to the saloon for supplies when he exclaims from the top of the flybridge steps: “Hey, Dad! We’re smoking!”
You look behind you to see a brown smoke trail apparently coming from the port exhaust. As you throttle back to investigate, you notice it’s actually emanating from the engineroom air intake. So what now?
