Wettpunkt.com, driven by Austrian Hannes Bohin and his English crew Miles Jennings and Ed Williams-Hawk, overcame the turbo problems that affected them throughout the weekend to win round eight of the P1 World Offshore Powerboat Championship in Cowes. The result came after the second disqualification of Team Sony, for missing course markers.
Protests and counter-protests held up the final results for almost two days.
Team Sony dominated both seventh and eighth rounds throughout and looked set to leave Cowes with a maximum points score. But Wettpunkt.comwas able to celebrate a win in front of huge crowds lining the Cowes shoreline a result which now places the team within reach of Sony at the top of the Championship table.
The course of the race, the second round of the Gillette MACH3 NITRO Gel British Grand Prix, circumnavigated the island.
Taking second place was filled by OSG, driven by Italian Giancarlo Cangiano. It was the most consistent of the weekend’s performers gaining the highest points score from these two rounds of the Gillette MACH3 NITRO Gel British Grand Prix. Wettpunkt.com were second with Fainplast third.
Giancarlo Cangiano, throttleman, was overjoyed.
“Two wins in England in two years is fantastic. This event is very special, Cowes is the home of powerboating and P1 is its future. It has everything; the human factor, technical challenges, competitive racing and sportsmanship. I say God Save the Queen, I’m coming back next year to defend my crown and enjoy the excellent hospitality of the people of the Isle of Wight.”
In SuperSport, the British wildcard entry XS Experience of Vabid Ganjavan and Peter Dredge completed a highly commendable weekend with victory in the SuperSport Class with Chaudron 1 from Malta second. Italian team Jolly Drive had crossed the line first closely followed by Oba Oba Racing but both teams were disqualified for a course infringement.
The XS Experience victory ensured that the team, in its first P1 event, took the Gillette MACH3 NITRO Gel British Grand Prix title with brother and sister pairing of Aaron and Audrien Ciantar second in Chaudron 1.
The British challenge of Championship leaders Drew Langdon and Jan Falkowski in the Buzzi Bullet had looked to be heading for glory when gear-box damage forced them to retire at the Bridge Buoy, near Yarmouth performance in their first Powerboat P1 outing.
The next round of the P1 series, the Mediterranean Grand Prix, takes place in Gallipoli, Italy on September 9-11 with the Italian teams looking to dominate the event on home waters.
