At least 10 boats have been damaged by a 6ft wave that swept into Maryport Marina after the marina’s gates failed. The gates were recently refurbished at a cost of £300,000, but it is thought that the locking mechanism failed causing them to fall into the sea.
Nobody was hurt in the incident, which happened at around 11am on Saturday, but one boat was overturned and five others suffered serious damage, while pontoons were twisted and washed aside. Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service sent two appliances to the scene and Maryport inshore rescue team helped to move some boats.
An investigation will be launched to establish the cause of the incident.
