A powerboating record-breaking attempt ended in catastrophe when the driver narrowly escaped serious injury in a crash that almost mirrored the one that killed Donald Campbell on Coniston Water in 1967 aboard his Bluebird K7.
Keith Whittle had just set a new record of 132mph for the Formula 2 class of powerboats as part of Coniston Powerboat Records Week on Friday 8 November when his 200hp powerboat Pepstar flipped.
The drama was caught on Cumbria Live TV and Whittle was visibly shaken afterwards.
