Nelson's most famous signal will be hoisted tomorrow aboard his flagship, HMS Victory
Nelson’s most famous signal, ‘England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty’, will be hoisted tomorrow aboard his flagship, HMS Victory, in Portsmouth. A team of ratings and staff from the ship will hoist the 33 flags in sequence on Victory’s three masts to mark the 203rd anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
As well as marking the anniversary of the most decisive naval battle under sail in British history and of Admiral Lord Nelson’s death, this year also coincides with the 250th Anniversary of his birth. Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Alan Massey, who will lay a wreath on the spot where Nelson fell, described the ship as ‘a truly iconic part of our naval heritage’.
