Tony Fleming begins his next epic voyage

From Southampton to the Arctic on a Fleming 65

Tony Fleming, owner of Fleming Yachts, has cast off from Southampton and is heading to Iceland on a Fleming 65 on his next epic voyage.

His latest passage began at Shamrock Quay marina, where his Fleming 65 Venture II is berthed, and will take him along the West Coast of Scotland, to the Outer Hebrides and Faroe Islands and finally on to Iceland.

Here he will pass the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano, which is responsible for the ash cloud that has caused chaos of late in European airspace.

His last intrepid cruise took him on a 19,000-mile tour of America in hull number one of the Fleming 55 range, a feat he completed in 2007. Read the feature in MBY’s May issue.

Tony and his captain Chris Conklin will complete the main bulk of the voyage with family and friends joining in Iceland if the volcano allows.

As with the 55 that he took around America, this latest voyage will act as the ultimate sea trial for his boat and its components.

Tony Fleming says: “The Fleming 65 is an ideal motor yacht for this type of voyage. She has been designed to handle tough conditions and we will certainly encounter a wide range of weather and sea states with over 250 miles of open ocean between the Faroes and Iceland.

“After Reykjavik we will cruise the fjords on the NW corner of Iceland and plan to venture out into the Davis Strait to look at the ice.

“We will then head back to Southampton to show Venture II at the Southampton Boat Show.”
