Indian Oil Tanker crew sinks 200m off coast
The tanker, Pratibha Cauvery,
ran aground after running into storms off the Indian coast, causing it to
partially sink just 200m from the shore of Tamil Nadu. Of the 37 crew onboad,
15 were left stranded on board whilst 22 took to a lifeboat, which capsized. A
Coast Guard helicopter rescued those left on board, whist authorities managed
to rescue 15 people from the capsized lifeboat and found the body of one crew
member, leaving six still missing. Today (Friday 2 November) three more bodies
were recovered, leaving three crew still missing at sea.
The damage to the ship is currently being assessed before
any attempt to refloat it to take it to a nearby port.
