Valencia littered with washed up container ships
Ferocious storms have driven two container ships on to a beach, just metres apart. The El Saler beach, near Valencia, has since been packed with locals taking pictures of the 8250 tonne and 9740 tonne ships.
Both were anchored off the beach when the storm hit the Spanish coast.
The Maritime Authority of
Valencia required the vessels’ owners to submit salvage plans within 48 hours,
and tugs attempted to tow the ships clear over the weekend. They managed to
bring the Panama-registered BSLE Sunrise’s head round to seaward but were
unable to drag her free, and both vessels remain firmly stuck.
Their crews remain aboard and
further attempts are being made to refloat the ships before there is any
deterioration in the weather.
