The RYA Motor Cruising Committee will be organising a new event at Cowes over the long Whitsun/Jubilee Bank holiday weekend on May 31-June 4 as a part of a special powerboat festival.
It will adopt a format very similar to the series of festivals organised by Motor Boat & Yachting between 1994 and 2000 which had a packed programme of waterborne competitions and evening social events.
Among the competitions will be the ever-popular blind boat handling where a hooded RIB skipper slowly drives round a short marina course following verbal instructions from an ‘all-seeing’ crew. If this is not difficult enough, turning the wheel to port steers the craft to starboard while engaging forward gear powers the boat astern!
A competitive poker run is also planned where competitors collect playing cards from official mark boats based at various navigation testing locations. Top prize will go to the skipper collecting the best hand.
There will also be treasure hunts around the Solent and boat handling competition making the event an occasion to remember.
Sponsorship is expected from various marine sources and by combining both the power and sportsboat festivals, until now held on separate dates, demand for entries is expected to be heavy. Further details will shortly be issued by the RYA, Motor Cruising Division.
