Son vows to beat dad’s Round Britain record

Buoyed by a celebrity crew including TV presenters Nick knowles and James May, Top Gear camerman Iain May has high hopes for team Garmin

Team Garmin are readying themselves to take on the challenge of the 2008 Round Britain Power Boat Race that kicks off in Portsmouth tomorrow and there’s nothing like a bit of family rivalry to boost spirits.

The 39ft Hunton will be skippered by Top Gear cameraman Iain May, whose father competed in the first ever race in 1969, finishing 11th. Iain and his crew, which includes TV presenter Nick knowles who will join the first leg, and Iain’s Top Gear colleague James May, hope to topple this record.

When asked where the team hopes to come Nick Knowles optimistically said “first”, while Iain was a little more reserved, “as long as we come tenth” he said.

The 48 participating boats are divided into eight classes, with Garmin competing in the Sports/RIB Class RB2 and there will be staggered starts. The race will start at 9.30am tomorrow and boats will race into 10 locations over the 10-day race period before returning to Portsmouth.
