The US Coast Guard looks set to extend security regulations for small boats using its waters. Proposals under discussion will require all non-US vessels, regardless of size, to file a notice of arrival or departure before visiting any US harbour.
It also proposes to extend the requirement for US-registered craft to carry Automatic Identification System (AIS) equipment to include small passenger vessels and pleasure craft. The moves come in the wake of the attack on Mumbai when terrorists used small boats to approach their targets.
