Shark sightings played down

Sharks sighted off the Cornish coast this summer may be the feared Great Whites. But then again they may not.

Sharks sighted off the Cornish coast this summer may be the feared Great Whites. But then again they may not.

Photographs and video footage taken from several boats off the coast purport to show the first Great White sharks ever seen in British waters. A shark expert from the National Marine Aquarium said that the markings of one shark, from photographs reportedly taken by a fisherman several miles off Towan Head in mid-July, are consistent with a Great White.

Sightings by tourists off Porthmeor and St Ives have been played down, however. Falmouth Coastguard dismissed all the claims as scare mongering, saying that there had never been a confirmed sighting of a Great White shark off Cornwall.
