A 34-metre yacht has been destroyed by fire at the Sunseeker boatyard in Poole
A brand new Sunseeker 34m has been destroyed by fire in Poole shortly before it was due to be delivered. The blaze broke out aboard the motoryacht, which was lying ashore at Sunseeker’s boatyard in New Quay Road, Hamworthy, shortly after 11pm on Friday evening.
Six fire appliances rushed to the scene and 50 firefighters brought the fire under control, but the £7 million boat was completely gutted. Poole’s RNLI lifeboat crew, whose station is sited opposite the Sunseeker yard, helped to move other boats out of harm’s way.
It is understood that the Mexican owner of the Sunseeker, who was due to take delivery within the next two weeks, watched as his boat went up in flames. An investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the blaze, but Dorset Police said it was not thought to be deliberate.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail has taken the unusual decision to illustrate its story regarding the fire with a photo of a cruiseliner, which it says was “similar” to the one that went up in flames.
