An eight-month-old cocker spaniel has been rescued after spending three months adrift and four months on a tiny atoll. ‘Snickers’ was aboard a catamaran that drifted disabled after losing its mast in the Pacific last year.
The boat finally hit a reef 200 yards off Fanning Island, 1,000 miles south of Hawaii, in early December, but ‘Snickers’ and the boat’s owners managed to swim ashore. The owners were rescued by a cargo ship but, although the puppy was left in the care of some islanders, it seems the latter left it to fend for itself.
Visiting yachtsmen reported the dog’s plight, and cruise ship workers, the Hawaiian Humane Society, and an airline have clubbed together to rescue ‘Snickers’ and find him a new home in Hawaii.
