Urgent safety checks should be carried out on all foreign owned fishing boats flying the British flag according to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB). The call has been made in a safety bulletin issued by the MAIB following a fire aboard the Spanish-owned fishing vessel Shark off Arran on 19 January.
“The causes and circumstances of the fire, and of accidents to two other Spanish-owned but UK registered boats, raises doubts over the safe operation of the entire foreign-owned UK fishing fleet,” it says. A spokesman for the MCA said that, in the light of the information provided by the MAIB, the MCA is currently reviewing the situation.
