Romania pulls plug on Class 1 event

Economic situation forces Romania to cancel its 2010 fixture just two months before grand prix

Organisers of the Romanian leg of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship have had to pull the plug on the event due to continued economic uncertainty in the country.

The news comes just two months before the Romanian town of Constanta on the Black Sea was due to play host to the fourth round of the series, and shrinks the number of grand prix in the calendar to just six.

Organisers said they were unable to secure the funding to host the race, but added that they remained “confident that the situation will change and next year we will be back on the Class 1 calendar”.

“Whilst we are all disappointed with this news, we fully understand the financial pressures facing the organiser in Romania,” said IOTA general secretary, Marco Sala.

“Ionut [Barbu] and his team have staged three very successful events and we hope that the situation improves and we look forward to a return to racing in Romania in 2011.”
