Eight robot boats from six different countries are to take part in a race across the Atlantic. They will set off in October, and will take around three months to make the voyage from Portugal to the Caribbean.
The race is intended to test the endurance and reliability of robots away from battery chargers and the predictable environment of a laboratory. Solar panels will provide each robot boat with enough power to operate its tiller and trim its sails.
Manned craft are advised to give the robot boats a wide berth!
