Plans have been revealed for a revolutionary new breed of eco-friendly cargo ships. Japanese shipping giant NYK Line says its Super Eco Ship 2030 will emit 70 per cent less carbon than equivalent size ships today.
Reduced hull weight and advanced hull design will reduce water friction of the 350m long container ship, while power will be provided by LNG-based fuel cells, solar cells, and wind power. The energy-efficient vessel exists in design and model form only, however, and a full size prototype is unlikely to be seen in service for several years.
