Final round of P1 championship abandoned due to severe weather conditions
The second day of the Powerboat P1 Portuguese Grand Prix of the Sea – the final round of the 2008 World Superboat Championship season – was abandoned on Sunday when torrential rain, high winds and poor visibility off Portimao made conditions unsafe for racing.
Primary concern was the safety of the crews and spectators and after the start had been delayed the decision was finally made at 3pm to abandon the race programme entirely.
“This has been a very disappointing end to a tremendous season” said Jim O’Toole, CEO of Powerboat P1. “It’s particularly sad because Portimao is a wonderful venue and we have a great relationship with the city and its mayor.”
