A ship is due to sail from Dunedin tomorrow, 25 July, carrying an entire pub to London to quench the thirst of an expatriate New Zealander. The idea came about when Tim Ellingham asked friends back home to send him some New Zealand-brewed Speights beer.
Hearing of his plight, the brewery decided it would build a pub, fill it with beer, and ship it to the UK. It was built in two 40ft containers joined together, and is fully operational complete with a bar, lounge, air conditioning, and plasma TV.
Four volunteers will man the pub, which will be open for two hours every night. The voyage to London aboard the chartered cargo ship Lida, via Samoa, Panama, the Bahamas, and New York, is expected to take between two and three months.
