Navigation log (for full commentary see below) Paid berthing fee ‘102.80 for four nights inc electricity.
1610: depart Cobb’s Quay. Wind has dropped almost completely as the low passes through.
1630: through Poole Bridge in company with balance of MBM Cruising Club fleet.
1655: Poole Harbour entrance. Speed 10 knots.
1715: Off Old Harry, sea surprisingly flat. Try autopilot but disengage as compass is not working and helm indicator wiring reversed during yesterday’s work. Part company with MBM fleet. Move to lower helm station, increase speed to 18 knots, then 22 knots.
1735: Anvil Point 0.75nm on stbd beam. Reduce to 20 knots as we encounter some confused seas. Course 240M-245M according to whim of chart plotter operator Alex who is taking screen shots on the PC programmes.
1740: 50 33.1N 002 00.7W.
1800: 50 30.8N 002 08.3W. Turn onto 280M. Sea a little bit bumpy still. In the middle of everything we miss the Radio 4 weather forecast. Rain squall passes to port with quite a lot of attendant wind. Otherwise no more than W F2-3. Portland CG forecast for evening NW F3-4, F5 around Portland, with gusts of 30 knots. Wind decreasing after midnight.
1830: 2nm E of Portland Bill. Good vis with bright skies ahead. Edge around overfalls by closing land to E, then close the Bill to take the inshore passage. Lovely ride in lee of land!
1840: round Bill, not one lobster pot marker in site. Into slightly busier seas, not big, just 1.5m or so but sharp and steep. Exercise option to press on.
1845: reduce speed to 17 knots.
1900: through worst of slop. 50 30.2N 002 38.5W.
1930: 50 29.2N 002 51.35W. Sea flattening a fraction.
1945: speed up to 19.5 knots.
2005: 50 27.5N 003 07.25W.
2020: reduce speed to 16 knots, sea very sloppy again, probably wind against tide now biting. Wind now NW F3-4. 10nm to run to Torbay. Losing sun now.
2030: 50 27.0N 003 17.7W. Seas beginning to flatten as we close coast.
2045: increase speed to 18.5 knots.
2050: 2.5nm off Hope Nose. Increase speed to 23 knots, then 25 knots. Still some daylight. Actual wind from Brixham CG WNW F3, gusting F5.
2055: past Thatcher Rock. Increase speed to 27 knots, then 31 knots.
2100: off he plane 0.25nm S of Torquay Marina.
2115: alongside pontoon A.

Commentary
We had just about settled in for the duration at Cobb’s Quay, or at least for one more day, when the wind dropped to idle as the low passed through. Frantic activity on the pontoon soon followed as the MBM fleet decided to make a break for the Solent. About 30 seconds later, we stirred ourselves also.

With just 15 minutes left to prepare the boat for the 1630 bridge opening at Poole Quay, the resultant scene was like something out of a 1920s silent movie. But somehow we were buttoned up and on our way.

Our plan was flexible. Worst case scenario was nose out, get bashed a bit and pop back to Salterns Marina near Poole Harbour entrance. Next best case was set a course for Portland, take a look and divert to Weymouth if we didn’t like what we saw. Better again would be to round the Bill and take on a couple of hours of wind over tide across Lyme Bay. We didn’t dare hope for the latter.
