We get a taste of action at the front of the fleet
MBY’s Derek Wynans is on Racing Silverline today for the fourth leg of the Round Britain Powerboat Race.
Derek has stepped aboard after regular crew Miles Jennings, a former P1 series world champion, bruised three ribs in the huge swell the fleet encountered coming out of Milford Haven yesterday morning.
Miles will have treatment on the ribs while the boats race back across the Irish Sea from Bangor to Oban.
Oban is also Derek’s home town and the affable Scotsman will no doubt receive a hero’s welcome from his wife, family and friends.
After winning the first leg, Racing Silverline suffered engine trouble yesterday and after mechanics worked through the night to rectify the problem, will be running at 80% power today – probably about 60 knots!
Derek said: “I’ve got big shoes to fill after Miles left but I think my main job will be to hang on!
“This is one of the fastest and most competitive boats in the fleet so it will be exciting to experience the real race boys up close.”
