Trials of a futuristic boat capable of speeds of 50 knots in water just one metre deep have been carried out off the coast of Colombia. Stiletto is being tested by the US military’s Office of Force Transformation, and has been developed to counter fast boats used by drug smugglers.
Crewmen describe the 27m Stiletto, which uses an M-shaped hull form to create an air cushion, as a ‘maritime version of a Batmobile’. It is not a comfortable ride, however, and seasickness is reported to be commonplace.
The revolutionary craft is scheduled to carry out further trials, this time in open waters, later this year.
