Azzam pushes Roman Abramovich's Eclipse into second place in the superyacht size stakes
Roman Abramovich has just been nudged into second place in the superyacht stakes as German yard Lürssen has launched the epic 180m (590ft) Azzam.
Believed to have been built for a member of the Qatari royal family, the superyacht out-LOAs Abramovich’s 165m Eclipse by about 15 metres.
When she is delivered later this year, Azzam will have been in build for
just three years, a relatively short build-time for such a huge
project.
Lürssen managing partner Peter Lürssen said: “She truly represents another milestone in not only our history but yachting history as well.”
Burgess managed the project. CEO Jonathan Beckett said: “The construction of
this yacht – with its highly complex technical features – has been
extremely demanding and challenging.
“It has been a real team effort between all the professionals involved including ourselves, the builder and the designers.”
Azzam has 94,000hp of power available, which will be channelled through two gas turbines and two diesel engines to produce speeds in excess of 30 knots.
The exterior styling of the superyacht was done by Nauta Yachts, and the interior design by Christophe Leoni, whose brief was to create “a sophisticated and luxurious interior in a turn of the century ‘Empire’ style”.
One of the most standout features is an open-plan main saloon that’s 29m long and 18m wide, with no pillars or supports to interrupt sightlines.
