An investigation is being launched after an RNLI lifeboat capsized during a training exercise off the mouth of the River Wansbeck yesterday evening. Newbiggin’s Atlantic 75 RIB ‘CSMA 75th Anniversary’ was carrying a crew of three plus an RNLI inspector when the incident happened.
The boat was successfully righted and driven back to shore, but all four occupants were taken to hospital for routine check-ups. They were later discharged, but the boat itself is reported to have been placed in restricted service until a relief boat arrives on station.
Rescue cover for Newbiggin will in the meantime be provided by lifeboats from Amble, Blyth and Cullercoats.
