LBK 6, the last surviving D-Day veteran in naval service, has finally reached the end of her service career. She was built as a Landing Barge Kitchen to provide hot meals for troops and other service personnel taking part in the Normandy invasion, and was towed across the Channel in June 1944 to cater for personnel at Sword Beach.
For the past half century she has provided countless thousands of hot meals for crews of warships that have been undergoing refit in Portsmouth Naval Base. LBK 6 has now been retired and towed from her long-term home in No 3 Basin to Southampton, where she will be offered for disposal.
