Boat transport companies have been warned that illegal immigrants are using them to try to sneak into the UK. The warning comes after the Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) revealed that 15 men had been discovered earlier this month hiding in a yacht that had arrived in Poole aboard a ferry from Cherbourg.
Officials carrying out a routine search discovered the men, 12 Iraqis and three Iranians, when they noticed that a hatch on the boat wasn’t properly fastened. A BIA spokesman said, “This is the biggest single find of illegal immigrants concealed in one unaccompanied freight item at Poole.”
The immigrants were detained and later returned to France.
