HMS Daring will get a huge welcome when she enters her home base of Portsmouth for the first time next Wednesday. The arrival of the brand new Type 45 destroyer will be marked by a flypast of Royal Navy and Royal Air Force aircraft, while families and friends of the ship’s company will be waiting on the quayside to greet her.
Daring is the first of a class of six 7,300-tonne air defence destroyers being built for the Royal Navy by BAe Systems on the Clyde. The ships, which will provide the backbone of the Royal Navy’s air defences for much of the first half of the 21st century, are able to engage a large number of targets simultaneously and can target incoming missiles the size of golf balls from 30 miles away.
