Lowestoft is set to host the fifth and sixth rounds of the Honda Formula 4-Stroke Powerboat Championship this weekend.
It is the first time in the series’ nine year history that the Honda-powered fleet has raced on the Sunrise Coast and spectators can expect some high-speed, action packed racing off Lowestoft
Beach on 28 and 29 July.
In the wake of some spectacular competition in the Isle of Man last month, the 37 teams competing in the annual ten race championship now face new challenges as they familiarise themselves with the UK’s most easterly point.
Huge holiday crowds will be treated to what’s certain to be an amazing land, sea and air extravaganza over the weekend as the powerboat races coincide with the massively popular Lowestoft Sea Front Air Show and displays from the Bolddog Motorcycle Stunt Team.
To provide great viewing, the Honda Formula 4-Stroke races will take place on a specially constructed course close to the beachfront. Adding to the entertainment, it includes long and fast straights plus a tight chicane close to the pier. Both racers and spectators are guaranteed some dramatic racing.
“Honda is proud to be in Lowestoft as one of the major attractions in what’s going to be a fantastic weekend of non-stop entertainment,” commented Martin Sanders, General Manager of Honda (UK) Power Equipment.
“Though there’s been powerboat racing on Oulton Broad in the past, this is the first time the premier league Honda Formula 4-Stroke Series has headlined on the Sunrise Coast. This year’s championship features our biggest ever fleet and with a course constructed close to the beachfront, the fans are going to be treated to some truly great race action.”
Hopes of local success rest with Norfolk-based team H10 Lings Racing and its two-man crew, David Cowley and Paul Barkshire, They will be battling it out on familiar waters in the quest for top honours in the 150hp category and are banking on some local support to boost their chances of success.
“We can’t wait to get out on the water this weekend,” enthused Cowley. “Already the local support has been overwhelming. We have received many words of encouragement during practice and are looking forward to giving those in our hometown something to cheer.”
