First Spirit of the Sea Festival starts tomorrow

Host of activities in Portland and Weymouth planned for nine-day event

The first ever Spirit of the Sea Weymouth and Portland Maritime Festival kicks off tomorrow.

The nine-day event, which runs from 5-13 July, will feature a host of on- and off-water events, from beach football and swimming competitions to sailing regattas and photography exhibitions.

The event is being run by local government, businesses, clubs and organisations, and the plan is to make it a yearly event.

Gary Fooks, Spirit of the Sea chairman, said: “With this new legacy event, we are following the example of the 1972 Olympic sailing host, ‘Keil’, where their maritime festival has grown to be one of the biggest and most successful in Northern Europe, generating 80 million euros for the local economy annually.

“The long-term vision for Spirit of the Sea will be one that not only highlights and embraces our maritime heritage, but also creates a strong cultural and economic Olympic legacy for Dorset’s future.”
