Fires break out at boating landmarks

Two famous waterside buildings have been severely damaged by fire

Marlow Rowing Club, the home club of five times Olympic champion Sir Steve Redgrave, was damaged by an “extremely fierce fire” early this morning.

At least 50 firefighters from both Buckinghamshire and Berkshire Fire and Rescue Services attended the club, located by Marlow Bridge, and were still damping down the flames at 10am today.

No-one was injured and the blaze is not being treated as suspicious according to a spokesperson from Berkshire Fire Service but an investigation is ongoing.

In a statement on its website, the club said: “Much of the club building is destroyed or seriously damaged.

“The club is therefore shut until further notice. Updates will follow. People with private boats in the affected areas will be contacted separately.”

Last month Joe’s Cafe Kiosk on South Beach, Studland, was damaged by a fire, which is being treated by police as suspicious.

Firefighters were called to the kiosk just before 9.30am on 31 July.

The crews from Swanage quickly extinguished the blaze. A fire and service spokesperson said the damage was “severe” to the contents of the kiosk.
