Up to 75 firefighters battled a blaze that destroyed a building and several boats at Blackwater Marina in Essex
Firefighters have been battling all morning to control a blaze that has destroyed a building and several boats at Blackwater Marina in Essex.
Fire officers arrived on scene at about 8.30am this morning and called for back up. Since then 75 officers have struggled to contain the blaze, which has now been brought under control.
Assistant Divisional Officer, Neil Fenwick, said, “The building has now completely collapsed. It contained five or six boats, which have been destroyed. Crews have worked very hard and faced severe water shortages because of the remote location and the fact that the tide was out.”
The building was used for carpentry work and it is thought the blaze was caused by a spark which lit a pile of sawdust. A full investigation will now be carried out.
In a separate incident eight boats have been destroyed in a fire at Sunshine Marine Boat Yard in Llanrhyddlad, near Holyhead on Anglesey.
