Washington State plans to sell two of its high-speed passenger ferries on eBay. Snohomish and Chinook will be placed on the auction website next week after the Thanksgiving holiday.
The catamaran ferries, which are less than 10 years old, are powered by twin GM Detroit diesels giving them a top speed of over 30 knots. They have been laid up since 2003 when the state decided to get out of the passenger ferry business because of financial troubles.
Washington State Ferries says it will not let the boats go for less than $4.5 million each, putting them amongst the most expensive items ever sold on eBay. That might still be seen as a bargain, however, because each boat cost nearly $10 million to build and has seen less than five years service.
