Dredgers cut power to Yarmouth Bridge

Swinging bridge out of action as sunken cables are shredded.

Dredgers in Yarmouth Harbour cut through power cables, leaving the swinging bridge out of action. The bridge, which swings open to let boats in and out of the River Yar, is now stuck fast in the closed position, good for road users but very bad for boaters.

Peter Hayward, Isle of Wight Council Manager for highways and transport, said “It is not a simple task to replace the power cables, it requires specialist work to lay new cables to the harbour bed, which will take time.”

The Council has apologised to river users, and has said it is doing all it can to get the bridge back in operation as soon as possible.
