Derry attracts leisure boaters

The historic port of Derry is enjoying a boating renaissance.

The historic port of Derry is enjoying a boating renaissance with new fully-serviced pontoon moorings and a series of events over the year to encourage marine tourism.

Foyle Days, a new festival to celebrate the town’s rich maritime heritage, will take place from 6-8 May, with a host of events including ship visits, a traditional boat rally, exhibitions, demonstrations, a maritime village and a myriad of other on-water activities.

Derry’s maritime culture and heritage development officer Aideen Corr said: “The renaissance of our maritime offering goes hand in hand with growth in the sector throughout Ireland.

“In particular a number of marinas have sprung up around the North West forming a necklace of destinations ideally located close to the Irish Sea cruising routes and the Western Isles of Scotland.”
