2008 will see the reintroduction of the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes powerboat race, one of the world’s most famous powerboat endurance races. Up to 80 boats are expected to take part in the event, which will be staged over the weekend of August 22nd – 24th.
The first Cowes-Torquay race was staged in 1961 and was also the first offshore powerboat race to be staged in Europe. It was won by Tommy Sopwith, and subsequent victors included such legendary drivers such as Don Shead.
This year’s event will be organised by Powerboat P1 Management Ltd in association with the British Powerboat Racing Club, and the leading boats are expected to complete the course in less than four hours.
