Couple rescued from Thames at Day’s Lock

A husband and wife were dramatically rescued by passers by after they fell into the Thames near Day's Lock at Little Wittenham and became stuck between their boat and the bank

A 69-year-old woman and her 70-year-old husband were rescued after apparently falling into the Thames, thanks to the swift actions of two men fishing nearby.

Roy Walker and Mark Seagroatt were fishing upriver from Day’s Lock on the Thames on Sunday 6 October shortly before 6pm when they heard cries for help.

The two men responded to find a husband and wife in the water, trapped between their boat and the bank. By the time Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to the callout the couple had been safely pulled onto the riverbank.

Jon Walker, incident commander form Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said the “outcome could have been far worse.” He added: “We would like to thank Roy Walker and Mark Seagroatt for their quick thinking and prompt intervention.”

The air ambulance also attended the scene but the couple were later described as “fit and well”.
