Coastguard units may be drafted in from elsewhere to cover emergencies on the Isle of Lewis after an entire unit resigned. All eleven members of the Ness volunteer Coastguard unit walked out in protest after their leader was dismissed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
The MCA said that the dismissal was over repeated contravention of health and safety rules. Lives would not be put at risk because of the resignations, and search and rescue helicopter cover is unaffected.
