Britain’s oldest maritime charity, The Marine Society & Sea Cadets, has celebrated two anniversaries totalling 408 years. The Marine Society, which was established in 1756, and the Sea Cadets, which opened its first unit in 1954, merged in 2004.
Both were founded to support destitute children and train them to work on board the king’s ships. Today the Marine Society works to ensure that merchant and Royal Navy seafarers can access a range of educational opportunities via distance learning, while the Sea Cadets supports young people by offering a range of water borne adventure activities with a naval theme.
