A beautifully crafted 'medium megayacht' that won't break the bank
What they say
“There are no such things as ‘details’ when it comes to designing and crafting your custom-built medium megayacht.”
What we say
With 60m-long yachts a common sight along the Côte d’Azur these days, branding a 60-footer a ‘medium megayacht’ seems a bit grandiose. But it’s not as daft as it sounds, because what the 60 Retro does have in common with a lot of these modern-day Goliaths is a Dutch boatbuilder who is willing and able to customise every last detail to suit your specific needs.
So bear in mind that what you see here is an example of Boarnstream’s work, not an unchanging final product.
Beyond the myriad small details you will have to consider with a custom boat, one of the main points to ponder will be the 60’s accommodation: the saloon layout is completely up for grabs.
However, the arrangement of the wheelhouse and the coachroof means that by far the best guest cabin is aft – and the forward vee-berth cabin is quite small. This means that owners have to share the aft end of the boat with their principal guests. There’s no sharing of heads, as there’s so much space aft that guests have their own large heads compartment, but this arrangement doesn’t offer quite the same extreme privacy or separation between owners and guests that most other aft-cabin boats can. Build quality is extremely high, especially the steelwork, which looks impeccable. But then you would expect that from the Dutch – the accepted masters of steel boatbuilding.
So how does it stack up against the very best of the mainstream production boats? Incredibly well, I’d say. Although the spaces are very differently arranged, the 60 Retro has a similar internal volume to a Fairline Targa 64. Okay, it has far smaller engines, but true custom boatbuilding is a phenomenally expensive undertaking, and the fact that these two boats are almost identical in price makes the Retro 60 something of a bargain.
