Opening round of new P1 SuperStock series sees big wins for HeightsofAbraham.com and Premier Cru
HeightsofAbraham.com and Premier Cru (pictured) got their 2010 P1 SuperStock Championship campaigns off to a flying start when both teams stormed to overall victory in the action-packed Penzance Grand Prix of the Sea over the weekend.
Both pre-season favourites conquered the rough racing conditions in Mounts Bay, with each achieving three race victories.
Fearless manoeuvring and aggressive handling from the 300hp-class HeightsofAbraham.com meant the Matlock-based outfit found unrivalled pace on the water.
Reaching speeds up to 80mph, pilots Rupert Pugh and Dan Whapples secured maximum points, beating Team Maurice Lacroix and Rough Cut Racing into second and third respectively.
Man-behind-the-wheel Rupert Pugh said: “It was an unbelievable feeling to win our three races this weekend. Taking the chequered flag in front of a huge crowd of people was amazing.
“We rarely race in idyllic locations like Penzance where the public area is so close to the action so this was a fantastic way to start the season.
“Team Maurice Lacroix gave us a few uncomfortable moments but our highlight this weekend was taking Evans Heritage Developments in the chicane. It was epic in such bumpy conditions and now we look forward to Galway in two weeks with plenty of enthusiasm.”
In the 21ft (7.6m) 150hp class, Premier Cru pilots John Wilson and Neil Scarborough were pushed all of the way by Team Fox and GSS Mermaid.
Using its superiority around the corners, Premier Cru reaped the rewards of an intense pre-season training regime to claim gold in Penzance.
After lifting his trophy in front of an enthralled Cornish crowd, jubilant pilot Wilson hailed the Penzance Grand Prix of the Sea as the “best-ever opening race”.
He added: “It was a case of don’t back off and don’t look back! Everything came together at the right time. We’ve put in hours of practise over the close season
“For a new series to be able to generate such widespread interest is fantastic. Anybody that wasn’t here this weekend should be kicking themselves, so we really hope to be able to come back to Penzance and defend our title in 2011.”
