An exploding barbecue sets fire to a luxury motorboat in Sydney Harbour
A 50ft motorcruiser moored in Sydney Harbour has been destroyed by a barbecue which got out of control.
Flaming fat and meat sprayed over the 50ft Riviera Sport Fisherman after a small gas barbecue on deck caught fire.
“Once the fibreglass caught light there was no stopping the fire”, said the boat’s owner who was aboard with his two sons, “fire extinguishers were useless”.
Fire fighters rushed to the scene and managed to put out the fire, but the cruiser was so badly damaged that it sank soon afterwards.
The blaze spread to a second boat moored alongside, and that too later sank.
