Plans for a four-day visit to the River Mersey by the aircraft carrier Ark Royal have been cancelled. The navy flagship was due to arrive on 14 September, and the visit was timed to coincide with the start of the Clipper Ventures round the world race two days later.
The cancellation has been blamed on delays to the completion of Liverpool’s new cruise liner terminal near the Pier Head. “Arranging a visit by the Ark Royal is a fairly complex planning process,” said a navy spokesman, “we felt that there was not enough time for the arrangements to be made.”
He confirmed, however, that Ark Royal and other Royal Navy vessels will visit at a later date when everything is in place.
