A lazy day in Cowes... but is there hope for a channel hop this weekend?
Friday 26th May
Day 8
Position – Shepards Wharf, Cowes
A cold and overcast start to day 8 as crews went off into town to explore and to look for answers to our Cowes Quiz. Looking out across the Squadron Line and over to Southampton, the Solent looked very angry early morning, with white horses and grey skies above. Later in the afternoon the sun came out but there was still a chill in the air. Yesterday’s casualty, Zest has now been fixed and has been fitted with a new set of duo props.
The day ended with a superb buffet dinner at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, where the winners of todays quiz were announced and received prizes for their efforts. Mike and Margaret Thomson, the owners of ‘Alice B’ came first in the quiz. Our Thanks to the Royal Corinthian for their support at such short notice; the event was a great success. During his after dinner briefing, cruise leader Neale also announced, that with good weather coming at the end of the weekend, he would look to extend the cruise to include bank holiday Monday. This gives us the opportunity for a Channel dash to Cherbourg and back. With lots of boats looking to make their first crossing, and the extraordinary effort made by some of the boats to be here, (including a boat being trucked to the south coast from as far away as Scotland), it was a popular decision. There is now a possibility of crossing over to Cherbourg on Sunday. At least 10 boats have put their names down.
