Cox CXO 300hp diesel outboard production plans and release date revealed

The world's most powerful diesel outboard engine will be hitting the market later this year with the company expecting to build eight units per shift

Cox Powertrain has announced that its much-anticipated 300hp diesel outboard, the Cox CXO300, will go into production in October with the first units due to ship before the end of the year.

Demand for this innovative outboard engine has been so strong that the company now plans to build eight units per shift at its new £6.7million Shoreham headquarters.

Jerry Attridge, operations direcor at Cox Powertrain, said: “This is a very exciting time. Not only is the CXO300 a superb, innovative product, we are also creating a complex, high precision manufacturing facility using cutting edge technology to deliver what can only be described as a game changing product into the marine outboard market. Thankfully, we have built a fantastic team of people that I am certain will deliver a transformational product.”

The company’s attention to detail will stretch to production line cameras, which will verify the size and continuity of each bead of sealant used in the manufacturing process.

The news comes after Berthon Power, the official UK & Ireland distributor for Cox Powertrain, announced in January that they will be offering the 300hp diesel outboard engine CXO300 for sale as well as providing after-sales service and maintenance via a dealer network throughout the UK & Ireland.

The Cox Powertrain CX0300 was unveiled for the first time last November at the 2018 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, with a twin-engine installation fitted to the transom of Intrepid’s new 345 Nomad.

Based on the proven technology of a 4-stroke, V8 architecture and weighing just 375kg, the CX0300 offers a minimum of 25% better range compared to a petrol outboard and is designed to last up to three times longer, according to Cox Powertrain.

The retail price of the outboard is £35,000 but Cox believes that buyers could save as much as three times its price tag over the lifespan of the outboard due to its long life, fuel efficiency and reduced haul-out costs.

The CXO300 has been designed for commercial service up to three times longer than an equivalent petrol outboard motor, and it has been developed in line with NATO’s single fuel policy, which aims to cut the use of petrol-driven equipment in favour of diesel. Cox Powertrain says that the outboard will require longer service intervals compared to a petrol motor, of approximately 1,200 hours.
