Why should your personal submarine be any less sporty or stylish than your superyacht?
A Dutch company has launched what must surely be a prime contender for coolest superyacht toy in the world.
The U-Boat Worx HP Sport Sub 2 is a personal submarine that not only looks (a bit) like an Italian sportscar, it performs like one too, with up to 5KW of power delivered from six electrical thrusters.
This translates into a top speed of five knots on the surface and three knots below the water.
Styled as a “subsea Ferrari”, this personal submarine can explore the briny deep for up to six hours at a time.
Much like a Ferrari the HP Sport Sub 2 only seats two people, but unlike a Ferrari it can dive to a maximum depth of 300ft below the waves.
Chairman Bert Houtman founded U-Boat Worx in the 1980s and has been building personal submersibles ever since.
“The design is attractive, but above all, safe and functional,” he said. “We’ve adopted a very different look compared to traditional submersibles, but without compromising safety and ease of use – the ability to easily board the craft at the surface, for example.”
Weighing in at 2,200kg, the Sport Sub is quite a lot heavier than your average Williams tender, so it’s hardly surprising to learn that it is meant to be launched from a 30m+ superyacht.
Also, with a price tag of 1million euros (£790,000), it’s not exactly cheap. But who can put a price on the cool factor of piloting your own bright red submarine?
