Motor Boats Monthly, in association with the RYA have today awarded the winners of the MBM/RYA Waypoint 2001 Motor Cruising Awards with £1,500, £700 and £300 worth of free chandlery respectively.
Open to anyone keen and enthusiastic about cruising under power, the competition marks cruising accounts, submitted with pictures, on planning, enterprise, boatmanship and narrative.
Judges Alex McMullen, Associate Editor of Motor Boats Monthly, Andrew Norton, RYA Motor Cruising Development Officer and Nick Robinson of Sowester Simpson-Lawrence deliberated for some time over the large number of entries submitted. However, they came to clear decision to award the first prize to Martin Stewart and the account of his passage to Sotogrande on the Costa del Sol from his home port of Poole.
Second place went to Eugene Bari and the account of his passage from Ramsgate to Copenhagen on his Azimut 39. Third position was awarded jointly between Murray Loake and his trip from the Thames to Falmouth via the French canals, and Marcus Saunders and his first trip on his new 24-foot Doral sportscruiser, a mere 49 miles from Tewkesbury to Portishead.
The judges also mentioned as runners-up, Rob Andrews for a marathon voyage around Britain in his 23-foot Fairey Huntress, Alison Barias for a spirited account of a cruise from Southsea to Brussels in a 13m Dutch steel cruiser and Geoff Cullington for an account of his 2,200-mile cruise from Guernsey to Berlin by sea, river and canal.
